30: Old Market & Tonlé Sap Lake

We woke up around 9am. Its crazy how the land dries up from the rain last night. We went out for breakfast at a local restaurant. Our meal came to $4.50 USD for fried rice, noodle soup, lychee drink and mango drink. Also, Cambodia accepts both American and Cambodian dollars so either works.

I've noticed that in Siem Reap, foreigners sure get hassled easily 5+ times a day if they want to ride a Tuk Tuk. I get flagged in Mandarin by drivers saying ni hao, while Keri gets flagged in English. Fortunately for us, our Airbnb hosts have Tuk Tuk drivers as friends. This means we won't need to haggle for prices (as drivers overcharge) and it'll keep it affordable for us.

After breakfast, we wandered around, found modern temples and found the Old Market to browse through. We found pants for me which was fantastic. I get bitten all the time, while Keri does not. I didn't expect to buy some funky peacock inspired pants, that's for sure (photo attached below). I also found a small pouch and got it down to $3 from $5. Its sure interesting how you turn away and people drop prices instantly.

Afterwards, we walked back to our home and took a mid day nap. We had a Tuk Tuk driver arranged to pick us up at 4pm for a sunset trip. He recommended the Tonlé Sap Lake and drove us there. From there, we got into a boat that fits around 8 people in seats. We were the only two passengers on a boat of 4 locals. Our driver came with us to make sure everything was alright!

We got driven by boat to the local fishing village. Everything was so serene, so surreal as well. We saw tons of water homes and a village based on fishing and boating. We also had the privilege of transferring to a paddle boat with us, our boat guide and the paddler.

Our boat guide learned enough English to have alright conversations with. We went through the mangrove swamp and all the way to the lake. Unfortunately there were clouds today, so no sunset. We went back to our boat, stopped by the Crocodile Farm and drove off back. Our boat picked up some locals as well. Keri ended up driving the boat with like 10 people on board back to the shore! Such a privilege.

Our Tuk Tuk driver drove us back home and we went back out for some dinner. We had two bowls of noodle soup and coconut shake. I'm not surprised by bugs in my food. I'm glad I wasn't too shaken by it. Its protein to some degree, plus if the locals were eating it, I think we would be fine.

Afterwards, we headed back home for some laundry and sleep. We have a long day ahead tomorrow. First day of temples! Reminder to self, long sleeves and long pants to go into specific areas of the temple!

Cambodia, you sure took my breath away!
