29: Siem Reap, we're here!

We've touched down in Cambodia! We were greeted by Siem Reap International Airport, which felt like a resort. Make sure if you decide to go to Cambodia, apply for an e-visa and print out two copies. It makes going through immigrations much much easier and less line ups.

Just outside the airport, we picked up free Smart SIM cards. They had $5 USD for 5.5gbs of data. Insane! We got picked up at the airport as our Airbnb hostess arranged a Tuk Tuk ride for us to their home! It was such a thrilling experience. Everything felt so surreal. We went from one of the biggest cities to a small village in less than 24 hours. We saw a motorcycle carrying a family of six people (5 kids). We saw a car strapped with tons of cartons on the back of the hood. Everything is so different here.

When we got to our place that we would be calling home for the next five days, our hostess greeted us at the door. Everything was good. Even though we're in a bit of a culture shock, it felt right. We had a balcony for ourselves, a king sized bed, and our own bathroom. Such luxury for a non-hotel residence. We gave our thanks, took a quick shower (as it was 31 degrees Celsius) and just crashed out on the bed.

We woke up around 5pm and as Keri called it, it started to rain. We came to Cambodia during rainy season, but its cool to see the dramatic change in weather. It just kept bucketing a lot. We watched a bit of it from our balcony and unpacked our stuff.

We got downstairs and checked in with our hostess's partner and chatted a bit about the area and traveling. He took us out to Peace & Love pub and had $1 USD mojitos. That's definitely a good price! We chatted a bit more and then Keri and I headed out to Khmer Kitchen Restaurant for some Khmer style food!
Our host recommended it and he was not wrong. It was delicious for sure! Our meal came to $14 USD with a $2 tip included. We had 2 Khmer style dished, pineapple chicken and green pepper beef (but the green pepper was like the black peppercorns but green). And Keri had a mango smoothie and a a passion condensed milk shake. Everything was delicious. Definitely would recommend!

We weaved back through the Pub Street and the Night Market. You'll get hassled a lot by Tuk Tuk drivers, but we got home safe and sound. We were a little bit damp, but that's just how it is during the season. Large puddles everywhere, so don't wear your good shoes at all. I'm sure we'll have to get use to the wetness of the season in Cambodia.

Tomorrow, we're going to explore more of the local sights and plan out the temples for the next few days. And arrange for our Tuk Tuk drives as well. It helps having hosts that have connections with the drivers. That way you won't be over charged! Yay! Night for now!
