52: Kerikeri, History, Nature
We woke up around 7am today.
I may have mentioned in my last post, but there's around 10 girl guide leaders (over 60 years old) and around 10 German workers (around our age probably). Its really diverse here at this backpacker hostel, Hone Heke Lodge. I like it!
The owners are so nice here, free pickups, good recommendations for surrounding areas and nice beds! Also, Hone Heke Lodge is named after Hone Heke, a Maori Chief who instigated the Flagstaff War in Northland, New Zealand.

So we left around 10am for the nearest Macca's (McDonald's) and grabbed some quick food for the road. Keri and I walked to the i-Site in Kerikeri but they weren't opened! Definitely looks like its still in construction or something.
Anyways, we walked back to the McDonald's for a quick bathroom break and then walked to the Stone House and Kemp House. It was nice seeing the heritage and information about the history at Kerikeri. The Kemp House is the oldest house in New Zealand! And we saw the oldest pear tree as well!
We walked around the trails and headed back to the New World Supermarket for some quick food. I'm so glad we've been getting our fair share of vitamin C. The canned pineapples here and orange juice has been awesome! We got some meat pies for lunch and brought it back to the lodge.
We headed back out at around 5:30-6pm to Rainbow Falls. It was a good 45min hike through the heritage walk path, but it was worth it!
We sat around for a bit and then took the main road back as it was getting dark. I suggested the main road just in case critters start stirring at night. On the way, we saw police officers doing breathalyzer tests on the road! They seem pretty strict on their alcohol ban zones. We saw one lady get caught and when we got into town, we saw her again! She was warning another car, how nice of her.
Keri and I went to have Indian curry for dinner. Delicious! Chicken masala and chicken saag is delicious. They had a generous amount of rice and we ordered garlic naan bread. Must learn how to make naan bread. It is so delicious!
We headed home, packed up and went to sleep. Early bus ride back down to Auckland!
