50: Brisbane Layover

We woke up this morning at a reasonable hour, around 8:30am. We did our usual baggage check routine. You'd think by now we'd have a check list made or what not, but we don't. After finished packing, we spent the morning relaxing before our flight.

Around 11am, Keri's aunt and uncle suggested to have Australian meat pies for lunch! So, we packed everything in the car. We went to the Horseshoe Bay Cafe. It was gorgeous there. The cafe was right next to the beach so we had a good view of the waters. I had a stroganoff flavoured pie. It was delicious with pieces of meat and mushroom! Yum!

After lunch, we drove to the airport and checked in 2 hours before our flight at 3:50pm. Whitsunday Coast's airport is kind of lame. And by lame, I mean its a tiny airport with one cafe and no phone reception. I didn't want to be that one person wandering the floor for bars. But, Keri did point out an amusing thing about the cafe at the airport. The cafe was called whiskey charlie, which is for "w c", the first initials of Whitsunday Coast. Not sure if it was done on purpose?

We boarded our flight with Virgin Australia this time. So, no more budget airlines from this leg of the trip on! Virgin Australia has really good stuff. They don't require you to put your arm rests down for take-off or landing. Also, they have in-flight entertainment services. The only thing is, you need compatible devices with the app or Microsoft Silverlight on your laptop. So make sure you have the app if you're using it on your phone because you won't be able to use the onboard WiFi to download the app.

Our flight was only around 1.5 hours. We have a 12 hour layover in Brisbane so we'll be collecting our luggage there. So what is there to so at Brisbane at 5:15pm? By the time we got everything sorted out, we thought it would be best to go to sleep.

We booked a nearby hotel and flagged our first Uber cab at the domestic airport! Also, since I booked this hotel with Booking.com, I also got a text message from the hotel for following up with our arrival time. Cool! The Uber ride was awesome and we got to our hotel. We actually asked our driver on where to go next time we were there. He was pretty nice, used to be a Qantas Flight Attendant!

Our hotel, Airport Ascot Hotel, was pretty new. I saw that the reviews were fairly positive and that it just came out in August. The receptionist was pretty fast at doing her work. And we got a tiny carton of milk, which we realized was for the complimentary tea and coffee.

After dropping off our stuff, we walked to the nearby restaurant and ordered noodles for takeout. Or should I say, takeaway? Apparently they use that term in Australia. I had a good laugh at the restaurant name, Wok On Inn. After that, Keri and I went to the nearest Woolie (Woolsworth) which was a supermarket chain for some cheaper beverage options and breakfast. We headed back to our hotel and watched Futurama while having dinner.

Around 9:30pm, we crashed for the night as we have an early wake up, 3am. Taxi is arriving at 4am and flight leaves at 6:10am. Lots to do!
