41: Toranga Zoo & Sydney CBD

So, we may have woken up later than planned by half an hour. But that's alright! We're going to the Toranga Zoo today!

It may be cloudy and windy, with temperatures around 17°C today, but it'll be fine. Its Australia's spring time right now. Luckily, I packed a sweater cause the wind gets really chilly here.

Their trains here are pretty cool (see picture below). It has a nifty two layer car, similar to Go Transit but has adjustable seat directions with the seat back panel.

We took the train from Allawah Station to Town Hall Station (which allows us to transfer) to another line to get to Circular Quay Station. At Circular Quay, we quickly grabbed some food at Hungry Jacks and rode the ferry across to the Taronga Zoo Wharf. The ferry had really good views of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House!

The Taronga Zoo was pretty cool! We rode the sky safari cable cars up to the top and then walked all the way down through the zoo. We got there around 11:30am. The zoo was divided into 5 different trails, Australian Walkabout, African Safari, Orang-utan Walk, Kids Trail, Seal Walk and Rainforest Trail. It was quite cool seeing each sections. We saw quokkas, kangaroos, kookaburras, wallaby, Tasmanian devil, and lots more! Definitely lots to see and do. I think Kookaburras are now my favourite birds!

We were at the zoo till close, 5pm! We took the ferry back to Circular Quay and then walked down to Pitt Street Market. This market was an isolated part of Pitt Street converted into a pedestrian shopping district. It was quite cool and the appearance looked like it was from another generation.

We walked to a sushi train restaurant, Sushi Rio and had a few dishes of sushi for $3 a plate. We were spoiled from Japan because we had sushi for 100 yen! But it was still cheaper than all-you-can-eat sushi dinner prices in Toronto, around $20-$25 CAD per person. Our total came to $33.66 AUD. Still cheaper than Canada! I think I learned to love Tuna a lot more after Japan.

We walked to Chatime for bubble tea. Yes, we had bubble tea while away from Toronto! We also drifted into Regent Place which had a cool food court area with a melting pot of different Japanese and Chinese inspired décor. I wish I had a photo on my phone to share, oh wells.

And then we headed back to home in Allawah. We noticed that most retail stores close at 6pm from Monday to Wednesday and Friday and then 9pm on Thursdays. That's just kind of strange to me because it doesn't seem like Toronto malls close that early.

We spoke with our host about the shops. He was studying urban planning and explained how the CBD, central business district, was like our financial district in Toronto. It closes early, while pockets of areas around there like Chinatown will close later and such. We learned something new!

Till tomorrow!
